while cruising around the internet i came across probably the cutest blog ever by a girl named nancy, fully equipped with her adorable illustrations inspired by the outfits she wears daily! this summer i'm determined to practice other rendering techniques and nancy has me all excited to begin :)

she also did a post on antique costume dresses and this one by givenchy caught my eye. it would make a beautiful wedding dress. i love the overall gathering with the peek of ribbon that forms into a bow and how it drapes along the floor. simply gorgeous.

in reality i don't have time to even think about this little blog right now because of finals, but with a sickness brewing, inevitable feminine issues, sports related injuries, stress, stress, stress, oh and more stress, i need a break. over the last few days i have be escaping from this by diving head first into denial and dream world. this has included more drooling over sibella court's book and the shop and photographs of kim ludy. and i just recently found she lives in Framingham, MA! that's less than a half an hour from me! crazy to think how someone who's work i admire so much is that close! the following photos are ones i have taken from her flickr and her etsy shop, trampoline.

she has some of the best vintage finds in her shop. you'd be stupid not to go check it out. has me aching for a visit to the brimfield flea market soon!

sibella court: round 2

a few weeks ago when i was in new york city i stopped by the anthropologie in rockefeller center. little did i know that my recent girl crush, sibella court, would have her own room/display set up in their store. needless to say, i was overwhelmed by awesomeness... to the point where i HAD to get her book. i couldn't continue living this life of mine wholly without it, and my credit card didn't deny it either so it was a go.

anyway, since then, and a 4 hour bus ride back to boston with my heart beating so fast and happily while reading through the entire book, it hasn't left my side. it has yet to see the bookshelf where it could mingle with its brothers and sisters. instead it has lived in my bed (even when i sleep), on the end table, on the floor next to my bed, on the couch, on my desk, in my backpack, on my desk at school... this book is well loved. and although i already posted about sibella before i had to include some more images from the book to further show her amazing talent.

so many textures, patterns, and colors! makes me want to drop out of school, explore the world, and feed my inner-pack-rat by collecting everything beautiful in sight! sorry that the image quality is less than steller - they're not doing her work justice at all.

i figured why not continue with the trend i started yesterday - another dress that i can't afford paired with an equally cool song. i'm absolutely in love with the pattern. i'm trying to evoke some of the same playful looseness in my current retail project (failing miserably so far, but i'm getting there!). i've noticed lately that i'm drawn to blues and reds together. my room, my projects. unfortunately it's not just a spring habit of mine, although a light peacocky blue with a ballerina pink is absolutely adorable. gotta bust out of my color rut ASAP!

as for the other song i'm addicted to at the moment, i discovered matthew brookshire through pandora (on the ingrid michaelson station, but the lady gaga one is pretty kick ass too) and although i don't find the rest of his music that interesting, this one song is super cute. i especially like the line "you’re so sweet you give me pimples/ i could eat out of your dimples." makes me laugh. ok, so here it is, "i fall out"!

i've been toying with the idea of getting a tattoo lately, although the likelyhood of that happening is pretty minimal considering i'm afraid of needles. but should i overcome my fear i would definitely travel to nyc to have amanda wachob do it after having seen her portfolio.

my favorite is the first image, but i also love how loose and textural the abstract paint ones are. definitely check out her conceptual tattoos on the site though. the gem one above is an example of that. she uses distilled water instead of ink, which creates a "bloodline." here is a little blurb about it taken from her site - "the lack of pigment renders the marking impermanent. an ideographic shape carries thought and stands for something beyond itself. it is intended that as your body heals the mark, the symbol's energies are absorbed." pretty cool if you ask me!

here is the potential color palette of the retail space i'm working on at the moment. i'm thinking white, ivory, gold, what victoria's secret refers to as "whisper pink," muted olive, lavender, with a mix of light and ashy medium woods, and some highly polished stone to give it that snooty, sleek, high end retail appeal. and texture too, mmMm. check out that first picture! i also ran into the following quote and found it very inspiring... so true, jim, sooooo true.

the interiors of stella mccartney's stores aren't the only stunning detail of the space, the clothing is pretty fabulous too! i especially love her 2010 resort line. surely adding this to the inspiration files for the upcoming project. you can always count me in if there are stripes, bows, and sequins involved! what's also great about her line is that she uses sustainable fabrics - 15% of the line is partially or 100 percent organic. this stemmed from maternal influence (her mother was a vegetarian) as well as growing up in the country with her family.

as you can see i'm having trouble choosing my favorite. the closest i'll get to one of these beauties though is by visiting her NYC store, which i hope to do one of these upcoming weekends. research :)

one of my absolute most favorite things in the world is when we start a new project in class. i get the same first-day-of-school excitement all over again and would gladly skip all the way to school if it was physically possible. yesterday was one of those days and although the excitement was squashed by an awful workout before class, i woke up this morning oozing happy.

for this assignment we are designing a retail store (the actual site given to us was from a project my teacher did for the natick collection) - which is the direction i wish to go after graduating - so i'm ready to stir up some fabulous crazy design here. to start the project we have to observe a high end women's wear brand, catalog their inventory, visit their stores, see how they merchandise, handle lighting, scope out traffic patterns, etc. after some serious brain searching (trust me, it's a mess in there) i remembered i had seen this flagship retail store design for stella mccartney a couple months ago and the design is right up my alley. needless to say, i'm modeling my project after her brand and the design created for her milan store by london studio APA.

unfortunately, flying to milan to observe the space in person is a bit out of reach on a graduate student's salary. bummer! the space is quite stunning though. some of my favorite details are the visually textural herringbone flooring, the brass handrails, the sculptural clothes hanging rails, and the bright pops of felt inside the plinths. i would never have thought to pair all of the strong geometrical elements with the delicate fresco ceiling. it definitely gives an air of femininity to the space.

i'm just starting a project for school designing the boston office of the department of neighborhood development and while cruising around the internet this morning i came across the photography of david maisel. now although his photography is purely landscape i think this would definitely relate to the urban environment i'm designing for. besides its obvious grungy, textural feel the coloring and contrast of the lakes, as well as the structural grids created by the banks, feels very much like a city's atmosphere - lively, structured (see tall building/home construction and web of roads), geometric, and full of color and energy.

i love paper. you should see me when i walk into Paper Source - it's the whole "kid at a candy store" thing but even more intense... at least inside my head. so when i ran into the work of nikki salk and amy flurry, with their collection of paper sculpture, i was instantly drawn to it. it's another one of those moments where i was kicking myself for not having thought of it first! my personal favorite is the pig tails one, of course :)

it's also great because nikki has her degree in interior design (as i will too!...eventually) and amy is also very accomplished having been an editor and stylist for many top publications, such as InStyle.

i promised myself i would be more productive this winter break. so far i've been plagued with sickness but now that i think i've come out the other end of that, minus the desperate need to nap every free second of the day, i'm going to keep true to my goal! i swear! one of the top things on my list to accomplish is to make some necklaces. a bit of my inspiration includes the following from anthropologie, of course. i'm going to do a mix of flowers with some crocheting or twisted rope, or maybe some small gold loop chains. or both! stay tuned :)

ran into this residence on the contemporist this morning and it just made my day. it is the Rua Alabarda residence in San Paulo and is designed by architect Affonso Risi.

i love the organic pathway with the little tree island. who says side walks have to be narrow and straight?! and the playfulness of the yard makes me long for warm weather - although i'm not minding too much the blizzard that is on its way. if it's going to be cold it better snow otherwise i'm just as grumpy and gray as the bare ground is. but the dining room is great as well. i wasn't too thrilled with the interiors of the house (check out the rest of the photos on his site to see why - the architecture definitely outshines the interior). they're just too white, but not in a good way. and there is some pretty hideous living room furniture too. but the saarinen dining table, my absolute favorite of all time, with the bright yellow chairs that bring out the color in the art work is stunning. and the koi pool under the stairs? fabulous.

yesterday i was killing some time in borders, which i should really do more often, and stumbled upon Lofts Design Source. now i know it's just another one of those "coffee table" type books - mostly pictures, very little text. but i looked through the entire thing and found some really interesting spaces.

the most inspiring space i found, however, was the Flex Loft by Archikubik. here are some of the pictures i found online...

you're going to have to click to make them larger (yeah, i was too lazy to edit the ones found on their site) - but it's the middle picture of the 1st image that had me all excited. i won't be able to afford living by myself in this loft i imagine for a while, but when i can i'm definitely going to have furniture all low to the ground. i've had a bit of an obsession with japanese design lately. so many of my projects the last 2 semesters have been japanese inspired, and i even wrote my research paper on traditional japanese architecture and how it bridges man and nature. yikes! being in school i think it might be best for me to find another obsession to experiment with.

oh, and when i get that loft it's also going to be covered in plants like this...

i'll have pretty pictures of the boards i designed and the exact materials i chose for this project next week (the file's are at school), but for now how about some renderings? for a little background on the project, we had to choose a current designer provided by the teacher (i chose yabu pushelberg) and use their design principles to design a sitting room (space provided by teacher as well). from yabu pushelberg i took their contemporary sense of design, with furniture low to the ground, with dark outlines (both of which could be inspired by japanese block prints and furniture design), use of natural materials (i used reclaimed walnut, porcelain tiles, and cement flooring), sculptural walls, repetition of form, and local inspiration (which i took from the old factories in Lowell, MA). and i was allowed to determine the exterior door and window design (i forgot handles on the doors... so use your imagination there), fireplace design, and the height of the ceiling as appropriate to my concept. so after a few weeks work this is what came of it. wah-la!

i am loving the interesting combination of contemporary and antiquated design within this architect's apartment. the original and uneven condition of the walls and ceiling were kept as they were, protected with with a layer of varnish. this natural texture against solid white elements then becomes almost like artwork. i wonder if my landlord would mind if i ripped down our walls to see/preserve what is behind it?

i've run into an overwhelming amount of amazing spaces on the internet in the past few days, one of them being the olivomare restaurant by pierluigi piu. an all white space with various textures and interesting forms always captures my attention, but i really like the combination and use of color when it is done. especially in the first photo below, it's like looking through a kaleidoscope, but less nauseating! i, honestly, think that i might find eating in this space a bit uncomfortable - fear of getting it dirty! it might be too white for me to enjoy being in, but boy does it look pretty :)

i got a call from dolce vita yesterday saying that the most awesome shoes that i ordered were actually not available in my size, and that they wouldn't be getting more in. mega bummer. but i ran into these beauties by camper this morning and i think i might have found an alternative.

i guess i just need to decide if my hips would be ok with wearing heels everyday... and then they can be mine!

there is just something about wet leaves and wood that reminds me of fall, and after seeing this montreal based home (also by a montreal designer) it's making me feel ok about the season changing. the combination of wood and dark grey walls with bright yellowish-green accents makes me happy as well.

i'm probably going to miss the bus because of this post, but i'm just too excited about this not to share. a TREE HOUSE for adults! it has a king sized bed, bathroom, kitchen, loft, porch... and it over looks a lake. make it mine. if i hear the kitchen has open shelving, that it comes with a kitten, and that there are wood floors throughout, i just might die.

"My work continues to be an investigation of forms under transformation. I explore the healthy/sick, sublime, wet/dry, sexual, growth/rot, stiff/limp/squishy, thriving and failure that are the fragile properties of the body and nature. i'm currently working on a project for residential design where we have to choose a contemporary designer to draw inspiration from. i choose george yabu and glenn pushelberg, who make up the toronto and nyc based firm yabu pushelberg, and the image below is probably my favorite amongst their work. because of the fabulous textured wall, wooden installation hanging from the ceiling, and saarinen chairs, of course!

about a year ago i found the image directly below in dwell and immediately tore it from the magazine and put it up on my wall (where it still lives).

and while this image remains my favorite of his, especially the quarry series from vermont, these new images i've stumbled upon just now are a close second. the pattern, the texture, the color... absolutely amazing.

i love the thick slab of wood used for this platform bed. especially how the mattress is significantly smaller and how the comforter folds at the surface. i think i'm going to need 3 bedrooms in my future home... one with a bed like this, one with an iron frame (with head and foot board), and the last with a wood post canopy.

her new cd "everybody" came out today and i have to admit i've had this day marked in my calender for months. and i might have been counting down the days for at least the past two weeks. but the day has come!!! and after listening through for the first time i can confidently say that it is just as amazing as i had dreamed. so run out to your local target store, newbury comics, etc etc, or get it on itunes (deluxe version is only $7.99! that might be a mistake, especially since the song only version is $9.99... get your hands on that deal ASAP), and then you can join in on my ingrid happy dance.

it's probably the fact that i was at work at 5am this morning doing section redo's that has gotten furniture and merchandising on my mind, but unico's furniture and displays are fabulous. their website is in japanese, so exploring around it was made possible by the little icons on the right and altavista babelfish translator. what i could dig up about this company included that their furniture is made of teak, yay eco-friendly! they also have a restaurant as part of their store, reminding me much of IKEA (there is no where else you can get a hotdog, cinnabun, and a drink for $2. amazing.) they also like succulents, which i have been meaning to get my hands on... and hopefully not kill, of course. and their philosophy is that you should enjoy everyday life, and do so by providing yourself with a space to relax and feel at home.

their pieces are low to the ground, have a definite horizontal feeling (raising them off of the floor helps), this elevation also makes them feel lighter, but they remain simple with great form... and absolutely beautiful! and their merchandising is very homey. if only i knew japanese, and could convince them to ship to my apartment, the only problem i would then have would be finding a place to put it all.

i'm sitting here with my little desk fan throwing warm air back on my face... leaving me with a great longing for pretty, breezy, cool landscapes - especially those designed by andrea cochran, my current favorite! a nice glass of lemonade, sundress, some twinkly lights, flowers, and a big blanket laid over any of these green beauties would be perfect right now.

dezeen magazine just posted this today and i found it interesting. and while i wouldn't really consider myself to be an earthy crunchy person, i do my part for the environment. i recycle. i cut those tabs on 6-packs so little duckies don't get stuck. i don't litter. i bring reusable bags for groceries. but the green movement is getting bigger, and more popular (luckily), and rightfully so. it's only a matter of time until this fad becomes a reality we all must live with. and knowing it can be done as attractive as the following examples i just don't see how anyone could resist!
